Glyphosate and herbicide resistant plants

چکیده

There is a common understanding that commercially traded formulations of glyphosate, such as Roundup, can be more toxic than glyphosate alone. Therefore, the EU has already taken measures to remove problematic additives known as POE tallowamine from the market. However, imports of genetically engineered plants resistant to glyphosate are exposed to high dosages of the herbicide in countries where they are grown, such as Argentina, Brazil and the US. There have been 16 authorisations for the import of genetically engineered plants resistant to glyphosate issued since April 2015. However, problematic additives are still allowed in those countries where the plants are cultivated. The EU Commission has confirmed the respective gaps in risk assessment: “A significant amount of food and feed is imported into the EU from third countries. This includes food and feed produced from glyphosate-tolerant crops. Uses of glyphosate-based plant protection products in third countries are evaluated by the competent authorities in those countries against the locally prevailing regulatory framework, but not against the criteria of Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009. A Review on Production of Glyphosate-Resistant Plants with Emphasis on Molecular Methods

Herbicide-resistant plants are one of the most common plants that comprise the majority of the total population of transgenic plants. Glyphosate is an herbicide that controls a wide range of plant species. Position of these herbicides reaction is 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) that only exists in plants and some bacteria. This herbicide was known to be suitable and safe for...

How plants survive glyphosate

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the world for several reasons, including: 1) high level of effectiveness, 2) flexibility in application, 3) large margin of crop safety in glyphosate resistant crops, and 4) safety to applicators and the environment. Glyphosate was used for more than 20 years before weeds developed resistance to the chemical. This relative low risk of glyphosate r...

Plant biotechnology: ecological case studies on herbicide resistance.

The emerging field of molecular ecology aims to improve the ecological predictability of transgenic crop plants. The most widely cultivated lines are Roundup-Ready plants, which are genetically modified to be resistant to the broad-spectrum herbicide glyphosate. Recent publications demonstrate two ecological effects that were not anticipated: the widespread emergence of glyphosate-resistant wee...

Aldo‐keto reductase enzymes detoxify glyphosate and improve herbicide resistance in plants

In recent years, concerns about the use of glyphosate-resistant crops have increased because of glyphosate residual levels in plants and development of herbicide-resistant weeds. In spite of identifying glyphosate-detoxifying genes from microorganisms, the plant mechanism to detoxify glyphosate has not been studied. We characterized an aldo-keto reductase gene from Pseudomonas (PsAKR1) and rice...

Seed bank persistence of genetically modified canola in California.

INTRODUCTION Canola, which is genetically modified (GM) for tolerance to glyphosate, has the potential to become established as a new glyphosate resistant weed, thus reducing the effectiveness of glyphosate. METHODS Volunteer from dormant canola seeds produced thousands of plants per hectare in the fourth year (2011) following a 2007 crop harvest. This occurred with no additional canola seed ...
